Social Democrat and member of parliament Šarūnas Šukevičius will run for mayor of Kaunas District after long-serving mayor Valerijus Makūnas decided not to seek re-election, LRT reports.
The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party’s Kaunas District branch approved a preliminary list of candidates for the municipal council at a conference on Thursday and selected Šukevičius as its mayoral candidate.
Makūnas agreed to lead the party’s council list but will not seek another term as mayor. He said Šukevičius had experience in both local and national politics, having worked as a municipal administration specialist, a Karmėlava eldership head and an administration director.
Municipal elections will take place in March next year. Liberal Viktoras Pranckietis and conservative Justinas Urbanavičius have also announced plans to run for mayor of Kaunas District.
