Estonian theatre company Black Box has begun rehearsals for “But the Night,” a production for babies and toddlers that will introduce young audiences to a range of sounds, ERR reports. The show premieres on December 12 at Teatri Kodu, a venue at the Tartu Toy Museum.

The 25-minute production is based on Ellen Niit’s poem “Krõll ja igasugused hääled” (“Krõll and all kinds of sounds”). Its creators say it is intended both for children learning to express themselves verbally and for those who already do so. The sounds made by the human voice are at the heart of the show.

Director Kaija M Külm said the team is creating a welcoming space for young audience members and their accompanying adults. She added that Niit’s poem is full of warmth and joy, qualities she said are welcome as darker days approach.

Külm is the director and dramaturge. The production’s artist is Inga Vares, its lighting designer is Karolin Aatonen and its sound designer is Sten-Olle Moldau. Mariann Tammaru and Agur Seim perform on stage. The show is intended for children aged six months to three years.
