Latvia’s Internal Security Bureau (IDB) will investigate all criminal offences committed by municipal police employees from October 28, LSM reported, whether they occur on or off duty.
Amendments to the Criminal Procedure Law expanding the bureau’s authority take effect this week. Until now, the IDB investigated violent offences committed by municipal police employees while performing their duties.
The change is intended to ensure consistent investigations and end the previous division of responsibilities between investigative bodies. The IDB will carry out its new duties using existing resources.
Law enforcement agencies already investigating cases that fall within the IDB’s remit will continue those investigations until they are completed.
