The Estonian government has allocated 11 million euros towards renovating a new headquarters for the Interior Ministry, ERR reported. The project will cost 14.77 million euros, with 3.68 million euros coming from the EU Modernisation Fund.
The ministry plans to move from its current headquarters on Pikk Street in Tallinn’s Old Town, which it says is too large and has high energy costs. Its new home will be a property in North Tallinn currently used by the Environmental Board.
The Environmental Board is due to move this autumn to the new Taru nature house at Noblessner harbour. The ministry’s move is still in the preparation stage. The state-owned real estate company Riigi Kinnisvara and the Estonian Association of Architects are preparing to launch an interior design competition for the new premises.
Interior Ministry property management department head Siim Vahi said the remaining project costs would be allocated to Riigi Kinnisvara’s budget by a government decision. The company will use the money to renovate the building and adapt it to the ministry’s needs.
The ministry is expected to begin working in the renovated building in the first half of 2031.
