Macron says social media harm democracies

French President Emmanuel Macron said social media “harm our democracies” and were used to mobilise people during unrest in France, LRT reported.

Speaking during a visit to Marseille, Macron said social media were particularly active during the October 17 unrest, helping draw young and older people to places where crimes, attacks and looting took place. He described the platforms as “tools for mobilising the worst impulses”.

France has seen several weeks of protests marked by street violence and looting.
