ERR has made the full recording of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra’s anniversary concert available on its Culture Portal. The concert, titled “Elts and Peer Gynt”, took place at Estonia Concert Hall on October 23.

At the opening concert of the anniversary series, chief conductor Olari Elts led the orchestra in Edvard Grieg’s popular second suite from “Peer Gynt”, including the wistful “Solveig’s Song”. The suite’s second movement was also heard in 1926, when a trio of musicians who became the orchestra’s predecessor performed on the radio.

The programme also featured Erkki-Sven Tüür’s third violin concerto, “Conversations with the Unknown”, performed by soloist Vadim Gluzman, to whom the work is dedicated. Tüür said the title refers to possible conversations with one’s “other self” — an inner voice or conscience, God in the most abstract sense, or someone unknown.

The concert’s second half featured Witold Lutosławski’s colourful “Concerto for Orchestra”, which draws on Polish folk music. Nele-Eva Steinfeld presented the broadcast on Klassikaraadio. Helipilt Grupp, comprising Tammo Sumera, Priit Perend and Mait Visnapuu, was responsible for the live video.
