Estonian writer Mudlum has published a substantial collection of her short prose, ERR reports. Issued by Strata, Aine jäävuse seadus brings together 40 stories written between 2010 and 2026.

Mudlum’s stories create a detailed, distinctive world. Her writing has been described as microhistorical since the early days of her career. Rather than focusing on major events or dramatic upheavals, the stories look at objects and the people who own, use, lose or forget them.

They portray people across different eras and decades as they worry and celebrate, do things or leave them undone, and wear clothes or drink coffee. Everyday details intertwine with memory and forgetting to create a picture of people’s lives over time.

Mudlum’s work has been nominated four times for the prose award of the Estonian Cultural Endowment’s literature fund. Her books Poola poisid and Mitte ainult minu tädi Ellen won the award in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
