Painter August Sai has signed a representation agreement with Tütar Gallery, ERR reports. His solo exhibition, “Värvinahas”, is on view at the gallery until early November.
Sai’s series combine images from art history, film stills and staged photographs, selected mainly for their formal qualities. He sets the illusion of carefully painted images against the materiality of the painted surface, exploring how cultural knowledge and personal experience shape what viewers see.
For “Värvinahas”, Sai presents works in a technique of his own, combining motifs from old master paintings with a sculptor’s approach to materials. He removes the oil paint layer from the canvas and shapes it by hand, turning the original image into a three-dimensional, sculptural form.
Sai studied painting at the Estonian Academy of Arts and took part in the FLACC Workplace for Visual Artists residency programme in Belgium. His previous solo exhibitions include “Värvi lugu” at Hobusepea Gallery in 2020 and “Kakskümmend käänet” at Draakon Gallery in 2018.
Tütar is a contemporary art gallery in Tallinn’s Noblessner district. It represents artists including Tõnis Saadoja, Angela Maasalu and Urmas Lüüs, and presents their work in Estonia and internationally.
