Preparations are under way in Rukla for the first phase of a military infrastructure project jointly funded by Lithuania and Germany, LRT reports, citing the Ministry of National Defence.

The plans include maintenance and storage buildings for the Artillery and Logistics Battalions of Lithuania’s Iron Wolf Infantry Brigade, as well as for NATO’s multinational battlegroup. A tender for construction work is under way.

“Maintenance and storage infrastructure needed for logistical support will be built first in Rukla. In the next phase, administrative and residential buildings for several thousand troops will be constructed,” Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said in a statement on Friday. He said the new infrastructure would meet the needs of Lithuania’s growing armed forces.

The ministry expects to select a contractor for the logistics facilities by the end of this year, with construction due to be completed in 2028.

A logistics support area for NATO’s permanent multinational battlegroup opened in Rukla in 2025. It includes repair and maintenance workshops, warehouses, a vehicle wash, a fuel station and other equipment and facilities for servicing and supplying troops.

The ministry says the infrastructure projects also benefit Lithuania’s economy, estimating that more than 60% of the money allocated to them remains in the country, as Lithuanian companies often carry out work such as building barracks and warehouses and constructing roads at military training grounds and units.
