Priit Toobal was elected head of Põhja-Sakala municipality with 10 votes, the minimum required in the 19-member council, ERR reported. Six ballots were blank and one read: “Definitely not!”
Toobal, a former member of parliament who had been away from politics because of a criminal conviction, has served on the local council for five years. Since December last year, he has led the Meie Põhja-Sakala electoral alliance and the opposition in the council.
The process that led to his election began in September, when the council passed a no-confidence motion against Tiiu Nõmmik, who had been municipal head for 10 months.
Toobal takes office on Friday and said he would prepare a 100-day action plan so the new municipal leadership can begin work quickly.
