Lithuania’s Migration Department will not appeal a reprimand for a personal data security breach, LRT reported.

The State Data Protection Inspectorate (VDAI) concluded an investigation launched in April and published its findings last week. It found that the department had not used all available measures that could have reduced the risk of unauthorised access to the Real Estate and Legal Entities Registers managed by Registrų centras.

The VDAI said the risk-reducing measure itself had not enabled unauthorised access, but the investigation found a breach of the EU General Data Protection Regulation. The inspectorate issued the department a reprimand.

The department said the VDAI had not initiated administrative proceedings when imposing the reprimand. It also noted that it had promptly reported the suspected unlawful activity to the competent authorities within the legal deadline, supplied relevant information for the investigation and taken steps within its remit to manage the cyber threats. After reviewing the circumstances, it decided not to appeal.
