Shauna Soitu, a British woman who moved to Estonia two years ago for love, has grown fond of the country’s nature, culture and way of life, ERR’s Ringvaade programme reported.

Soitu met her husband, Kert, while they were both on holiday in Mexico. She had visited Estonia several times before moving and said she fell in love with both Tallinn and the countryside, particularly the peace and sense of safety she felt there.

She began posting videos about life in Estonia after sharing a TikTok clip of herself introducing herself in Estonian. The video quickly took off, prompting her to document her language-learning journey. Learning Estonian’s special characters was a challenge, but she wants to become fluent.

Soitu said she initially found it surprising that Estonians at work did not make small talk, but she has since got used to their more reserved approach and appreciates it. She also enjoys spending time in nature and going to the sauna. Her first sauna visit, at her husband’s parents’ home in Rapla, left a strong impression, especially the whisking with sauna branches.

The couple’s wedding a few months ago introduced their English guests to more Estonian customs. Soitu recalled the bride-kidnapping tradition, in which Kert had to complete tasks, including changing a doll’s nappy and singing, to get her back. Her guests were surprised but enjoyed the experience.

She is still getting used to how much pork people eat in Estonia and has not yet taken to blood sausage. At home, she and Kert speak a mix of Estonian and English. Soitu hopes to raise children in Estonia and says learning the language is important so she can understand them.
