Energy company Sunly has opened the Raba battery park in Põhja-Pärnumaa municipality, next to a solar park completed two years ago, ERR reported.
The solar park has a capacity of 45 megawatts and could supply electricity to about 13,000 households. The battery park can store 48 megawatt-hours.
Sunly said the batteries will allow it to store electricity when solar power prices are low and sell it when prices rise. The hybrid park cost 35 million euros, including 7 million euros invested in the battery park.
“It is important not only to produce energy, but also to do it at the right time and use it wisely,” Sunly board member Erkki Kallas said. With the batteries fully charged, they could power Põhja-Pärnumaa municipality for almost half a day at average consumption levels, he added.
Municipality head Kaarel Oja said the municipality benefits financially from revenue generated by the solar park. He called the battery park the next step in developing the facility and said it would benefit Estonia’s energy system.
