The Lithuanian government has approved a digital development strategy for 2026 to 2040, setting a goal for 85% of residents to have at least basic digital skills, LRT reported.

The strategy aims to strengthen digital capabilities in business, the public sector and digital infrastructure. It also sets a target for at least 40% of residents to have advanced digital skills and for information and communications technology specialists to account for 13% of the workforce, more than twice the current share.

The strategy seeks to increase the share of companies using artificial intelligence from 21% to 75% by 2040. It also aims for all of Lithuania’s small and medium-sized businesses to reach at least a basic level of digital intensity.

Within 15 years, all households are expected to have access to mobile internet at speeds of at least 100 megabits per second. The strategy also aims for at least half of subscribers to use connections with speeds of 1 gigabit per second, up from 3% currently.

The Seimas, Lithuania’s parliament, must still approve the strategy. Specific measures will be prepared afterwards.
