Latvia’s government has conceptually backed introducing the National Defense Service in the State Border Guard from 2028, LSM reported. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs of the United List announced the decision after a closed part of Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting.
The Interior Ministry will work with the Defense Ministry on how to introduce the service in the border guard, including the resources and additional funding required by each institution. The funding need will be considered while preparing the state budget bill, in line with the country’s financial capacity.
The Interior Ministry said the plan aims to encourage young people to take an informed role in public institutions, national defense and crisis response. It would also strengthen the border guard’s capacity and give young people the opportunity to take part directly in protecting Latvia’s borders. After completing service, they could choose to continue in the State Border Guard, the National Armed Forces or another law enforcement institution.
