Haapsalu will repair its main street, Posti Street, using city funds and seek to recover the cost from contractor YIT Eesti AS, ERR reported.
YIT told the city in a letter on October 9 that it considered the warranty demands excessive and had built the road according to the project. The company said the road’s deterioration was caused by poor design, not its work, and that the city had not done enough to prevent salt water from other streets being carried onto it by car tyres.
Deputy Mayor Peep Aedviir said the city would first repair the pedestrian crossings and then fix the joints next year. The city had already commissioned a new design for the crossings. Aedviir discussed possible solutions with the designer on Monday, without the contractor present.
Posti Street reopened in summer 2022 after a year of renovation that cost the city 3.65 million euros. A joint inspection by the city and YIT this spring found more than 60 defects. Repairs that were due to start in summer were postponed until autumn, when the contractor carried out only limited warranty work. The street’s warranty runs until July 2027.
