The cancer patients’ support association Dzīvības koks has restarted its Liepāja branch, aiming to bring patients, relatives and others together for information, shared experiences and support, LSM reports.
The group held its first meeting at Pegaza pagalms, a cultural venue in Liepāja. Attendees who have experienced cancer told Latvian Radio they had become more confident and were now able to speak more openly about what they had gone through.
Branch revival organiser Agris Freibergs, who has also had cancer, said the group had been active before the Covid pandemic but later faded as participation declined. He decided to restart it after seeing more people around him fall ill.
The branch plans practical activities in addition to meetings. With financial support from the Liepāja municipality and a local company, it has arranged monthly excursions around the city through March in cooperation with the Liepāja Tourist Information Bureau. Freibergs also plans an event at the Lielais Dzintars venue on February 6, during International Cancer Month.
