Eight-four independent political campaign participants have registered for next year’s municipal council and mayoral elections, the Central Electoral Commission (VRK) said, LRT reported.

As of Monday, 10 political parties, 24 political committees and two self-nominated candidates plan to take part. The remaining participants are party-nominated candidate lists or mayoral candidates in specific municipalities. Some political organisations plan to run in just one municipality, while others intend to field candidates more widely.

Separately, 15 mayoral candidates and 45 candidate lists have registered as representative political campaign participants.

The Liberal Movement has registered the most participants: eight independent and 66 representative participants. The Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats has registered 25 independent participants, followed by the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party with 11.

Registration is still open, and the VRK will accept participants through October 28. Under the Electoral Code, only registered campaign participants may nominate themselves or candidates and lists for the elections. They are also the only ones allowed to receive donations and incur financial obligations for campaign expenses.

The municipal council and mayoral elections will take place on March 7, 2027.
