PM links attempted arson at Starlink equipment company to Russia
Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius has linked an overnight attempt to set fire to a company storing Starlink communications equipment to Russia’s hybrid activity in Europe, LRT reported.
The attempt took place shortly after midnight on Sunday. Sinkevičius said the company had been warned by authorities about possible attacks and had increased security, but the attempt failed. He said the company provides connectivity for nine Starlink satellite antennas used by Ukraine.
The prime minister told LRT Radio that the attackers had targeted satellite antennas and a control unit, and that investigators found ignition liquids in containers ranging from three to five litres, as well as a 10-litre canister. He described the incident as a suspected act of sabotage or subversion and said he believed Russia was behind it. He added that he expected those responsible to be detained soon, but said he could not share further details while the investigation was under way.
Defence Minister Robert Kaunas confirmed the incident, saying it had been contained and was being investigated. He said an apparent fire had been started on the premises of a Lithuanian company connected to Starlink infrastructure.
The Fire and Rescue Department said a pre-trial investigation had been launched and declined to provide further details. Sinkevičius has called a National Security Commission meeting for Monday to discuss the attempted arson and a drone that entered Lithuania on Sunday.
