autumn leaves, Riga, waste collection

Riga residents can drop off collected tree and shrub leaves for free at 33 municipal collection points from October 24 to November 22, LSM reported. Most points will operate on weekends, while some will also open on weekdays.

Most locations are unchanged from last year. The city will not use a collection point on the parallel section of Vienības gatve in Ziepniekkalns, between addresses 120 and 116, because few residents used it and parking for unloading leaves was difficult.

A weekday collection point will operate at Uzvaras bulvāris 16A in Torņakalns from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on October 26 to 30, November 2 to 6, November 9 to 13, and November 16, 17, 19 and 20. Details of all collection points are available on the municipality’s website.

Leaves must be taken to a collection point during its operating hours and emptied into the containers or specialised waste collection vehicles provided. Leaves cannot be left in bags, and residents must take their empty bags with them. The leaves must not contain other types of waste. Household appliances, furniture, construction waste and mixed household rubbish will not be accepted.

Representatives of the municipal Department of Outdoor Space and Mobility will coordinate drop-offs and monitor the collection vehicles. They will also help older residents empty bags where possible. Riga Municipal Police will increase patrols at the points to deter unauthorised dumping.

Residents handed in 4,163 tonnes of autumn leaves in Riga in 2025, up from 3,301 tonnes in 2024 and 2,769 tonnes in 2023.
