Lithuania’s parliament has backed a proposal to increase the share of programming accessible to people with hearing or visual disabilities on the national broadcaster LRT, the broadcaster reported.

The proposal received unanimous support at its initial presentation. It would require programmes with Lithuanian subtitles to make up 70% of monthly broadcast time and programmes adapted for people with visual disabilities to account for 20%.

Current rules set minimum shares of 50% for subtitled programming and 10% for programming adapted for people with visual disabilities. Repeats are not counted towards those minimums.

Agnė Širinskienė, leader of the Democrats “For Lithuania” parliamentary group, proposed seeking the government’s opinion on the matter, but lawmakers rejected the proposal.

The explanatory note says the changes aim to make the public broadcaster’s information more accessible and support the full participation of people with hearing and visual disabilities in society. After discussions in parliamentary committees and the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Seimas plans to consider the proposal on December 10.
