Latvia’s parliament has extended the country’s participation in the NATO mission in Iraq until November 1, 2028, although no Latvian soldiers are currently in Iraq, LSM reported.

The mission provides training and advice and does not involve combat tasks. Its objectives include supporting the development of Iraq’s defence and security institutions and civilian sector, and helping Iraq strengthen its ability to fight terrorism, the Defence Ministry said.

Latvia has participated in the mission since November 2020, with three Latvian National Armed Forces personnel serving at its headquarters in Baghdad. They returned to Latvia in March because of the security situation and have not returned to Iraq.

The Defence Ministry said any future deployment of a Latvian contingent would depend on the mission’s needs and security developments in the region. All 32 NATO member states participate in the mission, along with partner countries Australia and Austria.
