Madis and Stubb discuss European security and support for Ukraine
Estonian President Ülle Madise discussed cooperation, European security and support for Ukraine with Finnish President Alexander Stubb in Helsinki, ERR reported.
Madise called Finland a close friend and reliable ally, saying both countries understood the value of their relationship. She said Estonia’s security depended on trusted allies and on Estonia being worthy of their trust.
On European security, Madise said a stronger Europe would strengthen NATO. She called on Europe to take greater responsibility for its defence and turn investment into capabilities that protect people. She said this would also help keep the United States engaged, and stressed the need for political resolve to respond to hybrid threats.
Madise welcomed Finland’s initiative to end the issuing of tourist visas to Russian citizens and said Russian fighters must be prevented from entering the Schengen area.
She agreed with Stubb that international law primarily protects small and medium-sized countries. A rules-based international order, she said, benefits most countries and every person.
Madise said Estonia firmly supports Ukraine. Ukrainians have the right to live freely in their own country, she said, adding that Estonia does not recognise borders changed by force. She said a just and lasting peace must allow people to rebuild their lives without fear of losing their homes again.
Madise also said Ukraine must decide its own future and that Europe must have a place at the table when its security is at stake. She voiced Estonia’s support for Ukraine’s progress towards EU membership and for an open path to NATO.
