Latvian police arrested two men in Jūrmala on October 7 and seized more than three kilograms of suspected drugs during searches of their homes, LSM reported. The men, born in 1966 and 1973, were remanded in custody on October 9.

The search uncovered marijuana, psychotropic tablets, amphetamine and other substances. Their exact quantity and composition will be determined by laboratory analysis.

A criminal investigation into suspected drug distribution in Jūrmala was opened in May. On October 8, the case was reclassified under Section 253.1, Part Three of the Criminal Law, concerning the acquisition and possession of drugs for distribution by a group of people.

The offence carries a prison sentence of five to 15 years, with or without confiscation of property, and probation supervision for up to three years. Police said the men had previously come to their attention. They are presumed innocent unless their guilt is proven in accordance with the law.
