Latvia’s government has allocated funding to Latvijas Dzelzceļš, the country’s railway company, to create special drill holes that would allow tracks to be dismantled quickly in a crisis, LSM reported Tuesday.
Officials have not disclosed details of the plans, the work or the funding required, citing national security concerns.
Latvijas Dzelzceļš is working with the defence sector to prepare railway infrastructure for national defence needs, including in a possible crisis. Defence Minister Raivis Melnis previously told Latvian Television that the tracks would be removed when indicators of a potential crisis emerge.
