Mantvydas Bekešius has been appointed Lithuania’s fourth deputy energy minister after serving for the past three years as chargé d’affaires at the country’s embassy in China, LRT reported Tuesday.

The Energy Ministry said Bekešius will be responsible for energy security, strategic infrastructure and emergency preparedness.

“The current geopolitical situation means we must ensure not only the security of infrastructure but also its resilience and rapid restoration, which requires expertise and decisive action,” Energy Minister Lukas Savickas said in a statement.

Bekešius said he has extensive experience in diplomacy and international relations. He previously served as Lithuania’s consul general in Chicago, deputy foreign minister and senior foreign policy adviser to Seimas Speaker Vydas Gedvilas. He has also worked at the Ministry of National Defence.

He holds a master’s degree in law from Mykolas Romeris University and studied at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Germany.

BNS reported that the other deputy energy ministers are Karolina Štelmokaitė, Darius Indriūnas and Ignas Junevičius.
