Defence Minister Raivis Melnis will return to Latvia’s National Armed Forces if he is not asked to continue in the post in the next government, LSM reported.
Melnis told Latvian Television’s “Today’s Question” that his possible candidacy had been discussed with New Unity, but he had not spoken with Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs of the United List. Melnis said he was waiting to hear from Kulbergs and had not yet received an offer.
Asked what he would do if someone else was chosen, Melnis said he would congratulate the new minister, return to service and be a soldier. He also said he had no plans to join New Unity.
Political scientists have expressed optimism about Melnis staying in the next government. The shape of the coalition remains unclear, with options including a two-party or three-party government, as well as a minority government. Kulbergs has repeatedly said he favours having professionals in ministerial posts. Melnis is an army professional and has New Unity’s support if the party takes part in forming the coalition.
