Riga plans to spend €2.17 million, excluding VAT, to improve safety on Granīta Street in an industrial district, LSM reports. The work will add lighting and pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, rebuild bus stops and make other traffic-safety improvements, the Riga City Council said.

A contract was signed with SIA SMA in late September. The work is expected to take 260 days, or about nine months.

More than 25 companies employing about 1,600 people operate in the industrial district along Granīta Street. The street currently has no footpath, while some sections lack lighting and safe places to cross. State Police data show that road accidents are recorded there every year.

The plans include continuous pedestrian and cycling infrastructure along Granīta and Krustpils streets as far as the Šķirotava mobility hub. A separated pedestrian and cycle path will run from Riga’s city boundary to the Malēju iela bus stop. From the stop to the Granīta and Krustpils street junction, the plan calls for a shared path three metres wide; the same design is planned along Krustpils Street to the mobility hub.

Lighting will be installed along the paths, and the Granīta Street carriageway will be resurfaced from Krustpils Street to the city boundary. New pedestrian crossings will also be built. At the Granīta and Radžu street junction, a left-turn lane from Granīta Street and traffic lights are planned.
