Police detain 10 irregular migrants in Nõmme district
Police detained 10 Sudanese men who were staying in Estonia illegally in the Nõmme district on Sunday evening, ERR reported. Nine were taken to a detention centre, while the tenth was treated in hospital after injuring his hand while fleeing from officers.
Police received a tip at about 7.30 p.m. that two dark-skinned men who appeared lost were standing outside an apartment building on Valdeku Street. Officers detained them and established that both were Sudanese nationals staying in the country illegally. The men told police that several others were hiding nearby.
Police launched a search involving patrols, service dogs and rescue service personnel. Officers used a drone to check the area and spotted people moving in the forest. The men tried to flee but were caught in several wooded areas. Eight more Sudanese men were detained.
Medics checked all 10 men. One of those detained had fallen while trying to escape and injured his hand. He received first aid at a hospital before being taken to the detention centre. Only one of the men had a document with him.
