Lithuania’s state seismic monitoring reliably recorded two weak earthquakes in the country’s west in December 2025, the Lithuanian Geological Survey said, according to LRT.
The earthquakes occurred near the deep fault system around Gargždai. The first struck at 8:35 a.m. local time on December 14 and had a magnitude of 2.7. The second was recorded at 12:03 p.m. and measured 2.4.
Their seismograms and spectrograms were characteristic of natural tectonic earthquakes. Experts from the University of Helsinki’s Institute of Seismology confirmed the Lithuanian specialists’ findings, the survey said.
The survey described the events as scientifically significant because they provide the first reliable instrumental confirmation that natural tectonic earthquakes occur in Lithuania. The data also allowed specialists to reassess a tectonic earthquake recorded in the same region on June 12, 2015.
