Firefighters answer 23 calls over wind-felled trees

Firefighters in Lithuania responded to 23 calls to clear damage caused by strong winds by 3:30 p.m. Friday, LRT reported, citing the Fire and Rescue Department.

From the morning until 3:30 p.m., crews were called 17 times for trees fallen across roads, three times for trees that had fallen onto cars and three times for trees on power lines.

The Klaipėda region accounted for 12 calls. In the port city of Klaipėda, falling trees damaged five cars: one tree fell onto three parked cars in the morning, and two other cars were damaged later.

About 2,900 electricity customers in western Lithuania were without power around midday because of the strong winds.

The Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service said the strongest gusts measured at 10 metres above ground by 2 p.m. were at Ventė Cape in Šilutė district, reaching 27 metres per second. Gusts reached 23 metres per second in Šilutė and 21 metres per second in Šventoji, Šumskas, Vilnius district, Kybartai and Vilkaviškis district.

At a height of 24 metres by the entrance to Klaipėda port, wind speeds reached 32 metres per second. They reached 25 metres per second in Nida by the sea and 22 metres per second near the Klaipėda lighthouse.
