Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda says he wants to travel and read books after his second term ends in 2029, LRT reported, citing an interview with the news portal 15min. He said years in politics and public life had left him emotionally exhausted and that he wanted to rest from it all.
“If my health allows, I will be a traveller,” Nausėda said, adding that he had yet to see many cities and beautiful places around the world. Some places, he said, he had seen only through the window of his motorcade.
He also wants to read books that have been sitting unread on his shelves. Nausėda said he had no ambition to continue in politics after completing his second presidential term.
He said he would not mind if people stopped recognising him in the street. Visiting Madeira, an island, where people did not know him had felt good, he said, “until someone on the other side of the street calls out: ‘Hello, Mr President.’”
Nausėda has been president since 2019. His second term ends in the summer of 2029. Lithuania’s constitution limits a person to two consecutive presidential terms.
