A building used by the State Police’s East Zemgale precinct in Jekabpils has been closed after ceiling plaster and parts of a suspended ceiling fell, LSM reported, citing Vidusdaugava Television. Staff have moved to other premises while safety risks are addressed.

No one was inside the office where the material fell, and nobody was injured, precinct chief Evita Galviņa said.

After inspecting the building, the Jekabpils County Construction Board prohibited the use of all its rooms. It found cracks in ceilings and walls and said it could not determine whether more plaster might come loose elsewhere.

The state-owned building, on Brīvības Street, is managed by the State Agency for Provision. The agency said it was ready to address the risk of further plaster falling, but noted that a 2023 technical assessment had not identified a danger. The Construction Board said it had previously received complaints only about cosmetic defects.

The building has not had a major renovation because of a lack of funding. The agency said a proposed list of works was rejected because a disaster management centre was planned for the location. The Interior Ministry said funding for the centre had not yet been secured.
