Scammers steal more than €41,800 from two companies using fake fine texts

Scammers stole more than €41,800 from two companies in Tauragė and Zarasai after sending text messages falsely claiming that fines were unpaid, LRT reported, citing police.

One company received a message on its mobile phone on Monday, purportedly from police. After an employee followed the link and entered online banking details, the scammers took €19,520 from the company’s account.

A second company received a similar message on Tuesday, claiming it owed a fine. After someone followed the link and entered banking details, €22,368 was taken from its account.

Police also reported three cases involving residents. A man born in 1971 reported that €4,800 had been withdrawn from his bank account after he entered banking details while logging in to an online account.

Two women reported losses after clicking fake links in text messages. One, born in 1999, received a message claiming she owed money for parking; more than €691 was taken from her account. Another, born in 1956, was told her car had been recorded as violating parking rules. She lost €1,440 after entering her banking details.
