US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday that Iran had completely lost control of the Strait of Hormuz, LRT reported. He also described Iran’s economy as being in a state of “completely uncontrolled decline”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is open. Almost as much oil is now leaving as before this conflict began. So they have completely lost control of the strait,” Rubio told reporters during a visit to Athens.
He said crippling sanctions would soon leave Iran’s economy in a condition experienced by only a few countries worldwide. Rubio also said every dollar received by Iran’s radical Shiite clerics was spent on Hezbollah and Hamas.
“Iran cannot have nuclear weapons,” Rubio said, adding that any agreement acceptable to the United States must ensure Iran never acquires them. He said Iran had tried to build up such a large conventional weapons capability that the country would become invincible.
