Alvis Hermanis, head of the New Riga Theatre and a director, has stepped down as leader of the We Are Changing the Rules party, LSM reported. He announced on X that he would remain an ordinary party member.

Hermanis said he had failed to persuade the public of the need to change the rules and that someone else should take responsibility for leading the party. He suggested that party members consider Jāzeps Baško as his successor, describing him as principled, persistent, intelligent and honest.

“I have realised that changing the world is impossible. Rules can only be changed on a personal level, by changing one’s mindset and habits,” Hermanis wrote. He said he would continue pursuing the party’s programme in a more radical way, starting with himself.

Hermanis announced his decision a few days after the 15th Saeima elections. The party received 3.4% of the vote, not enough to enter parliament, but will receive state budget funding.
