Viljandi Guitar Festival organiser Ain Agan says he waited 10 years to book US mandolin player, singer and songwriter Chris Thile. Agan spoke to Vikerraadio, part of ERR, about the challenges of matching artists’ tour schedules with the festival’s fixed dates.
Some artists return because audiences have enjoyed their performances, Agan said. French guitarist Antoine Boyer is appearing again with his partner, a harmonica player. The Rosenberg Brothers, a renowned Gypsy jazz group, are also returning, with a programme titled “Chaplin songs”.
Guitarist Robben Ford has not performed in Estonia before, Agan said. Although Ford has many fans in Finland and has visited the Baltic states once, he is due to come to Estonia this year.
Agan said young guitarists around the world are emerging as compelling musicians, not just technically skilled players. He also plans to perform at the festival, joining the long-running ensemble Eesti Keeled in a special project.
The Viljandi Guitar Festival runs from October 7 to 11.
