Lithuania’s public ethics commission will gather more information about possible links between election commission and LRT Council member Laura Matjošaitytė and State Tax Inspectorate head Martynas Endrijaitis, LRT reported.
The Chief Official Ethics Commission made the decision on Wednesday after reviewing a complaint from public figure Karolis Žukauskas. He alleged that Matjošaitytė and Endrijaitis may be a couple and live together, but that any such relationship was not listed in their public and private interest declarations. Endrijaitis has denied having close ties with Matjošaitytė.
Žukauskas also raised the possibility of a conflict of interest, citing Matjošaitytė’s work at the Central Electoral Commission and her proposal that it seek additional input from the tax inspectorate while examining the financing of the Nemuno Aušra party.
The ethics commission opened a separate investigation into Matjošaitytė in September to establish whether her consulting work for Nemuno Aušra breached the law on the reconciliation of public and private interests. The Central Electoral Commission and the Lithuanian Bar Association have also launched investigations.
In August, news website Delfi reported that before returning to the electoral commission, Matjošaitytė had advised Nemuno Aušra on membership fees and helped prepare the party’s response to the commission. She did not publicly declare the consultations. Matjošaitytė later said she had not been paid and has said she experienced no conflict of interest while the commission considered matters involving the party.
Matjošaitytė became a member of the electoral commission in May 2025. In the same month, the newly formed commission considered alleged violations of Nemuno Aušra’s campaign financing rules. Matjošaitytė voted in favour of finding violations in some votes and abstained in others. She said the votes did not create a conflict of interest or grounds for her to recuse herself.
