Narva-Jõesuu Mayor Maksim Iljin will run for Estonia’s parliament in the March 2027 election on the Social Democratic Party’s list in Ida-Viru County, ERR reported.
Iljin said the strength of the party’s local team was a decisive factor in his choice. He said his focus would be regional policy, arguing that Ida-Viru and southeastern Estonia were being left behind while Tallinn and Harju County prospered.
Social Democratic Party leader Lauri Läänemets said Iljin’s candidacy showed the party’s strength in Ida-Viru. He said the county needed representatives with local knowledge who could advocate for the region at national level.
Party secretary general Piret Hartman said Iljin had brought investment to Narva-Jõesuu and contributed to local development. She said he was born and raised in Ida-Viru and had worked for the county’s development for years.
Iljin has been Narva-Jõesuu’s mayor since 2016. He holds a master’s degree in engineering from TalTech and is pursuing a master’s degree in international business administration at EBS.
