Voters in the city of Jēkabpils urged their relatives to take part in Latvia’s 15th parliamentary elections, LSM reported, citing Vidusdaugavas Television. At one polling station, people arrived at 7 a.m. and waited an hour for it to open.

Voter Vija said she had decided how to vote before arriving and found the choice easy. She said honesty was important to her and that she had persuaded her brother, who lives in the countryside, to vote after he initially said he would not.

Other voters said they wanted elected officials to keep their promises and improve conditions. Silvija said she expected parliament to curb bureaucracy, while Ilze pointed to low wages and rising taxes and prices.

Polling stations in Latvia and abroad are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. The newly elected parliament is due to meet for its first session on November 3.
