Lithuanian MP Kęstutis Mažeika has proposed making passports and identity cards valid indefinitely for people aged 65 and over, LRT reported.
The Democrat registered amendments to the Law on Identity Cards and Passports. If approved by parliament, the change would apply to documents issued to citizens aged 65 and older from January 1, 2027.
Mažeika said the proposal would reduce the administrative burden and costs for older people, as well as the workload of the Migration Department and the expense of producing documents.
Current rules do not provide for an indefinite validity period for older people. Identity cards and passports must generally be renewed every 10 years from age 16. From age 70, identity cards must be renewed every 30 years.
Mažeika said the current rules mean people aged 100 and over must travel to replace their documents. He argued that facial features and biometric data tend to stabilise in old age, making regular document renewal an unnecessary burden for citizens and state institutions.
