Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda thanked US President Donald Trump for sending American troops to Lithuania and strengthening energy cooperation, LRT reported on Friday.
“President, I thank you for sending US troops to Lithuania and for strengthening our energy partnership through American liquefied natural gas supplies to Lithuania. Cooperation between the United States and Lithuania is especially important to us,” Nausėda said in a statement from the presidential office.
The office said Nausėda had stressed Lithuania’s readiness to further strengthen transatlantic ties and cooperation with the United States in defence and energy.
The presidents met in New York on September 22 during the United Nations General Assembly. Nausėda told reporters on Thursday that he had also highlighted Lithuania’s decision to spend more than 5% of gross domestic product on defence and a signed 10-year agreement to buy US liquefied natural gas. Trump responded positively to the information about energy cooperation, Nausėda said.
“As we were saying goodbye, he said: ‘We are watching you, we will not abandon you,’” Nausėda said.
