Chancellor of Justice, Estonia, Oliver Kask

Supreme Court member Oliver Kask may be nominated as Estonia’s next chancellor of justice, ERR reported, citing Postimees.

The candidate must be put forward by the president. Both President Alar Karis and Ülle Madise, the current chancellor of justice who is due to take office as president on October 12, could make the proposal. Postimees reported that the search was conducted jointly by Karis and Madise, but that the aim is likely for Karis to make the nomination.

Kask joined the Supreme Court’s Administrative Law Chamber in 2024. Before that, he was a judge at the Tallinn Circuit Court and, from 2019, chaired its Administrative Law Chamber.

Earlier in his career, Kask led the Public Law Department at the Ministry of Justice, served on the Council for Judicial Training and was an ad hoc judge at the European Court of Human Rights. He also took part in drafting several laws and chaired the National Electoral Committee.

The Riigikogu, Estonia’s parliament, appoints the chancellor of justice for a seven-year term on the president’s proposal.
