Lithuania’s mufti among suspects in human trafficking probe

Lithuania’s mufti, Romas Jakubauskas, is one of seven individuals suspected in an investigation into human trafficking and document offences, LRT reported.

A prosecutor from the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office is leading the pre-trial investigation, which also concerns the alleged forgery of documents or possession of forged documents. Two legal entities have also been named as suspects, the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

Prosecutor General’s Office representative Gintarė Vitkauskaitė-Šatkauskienė confirmed Jakubauskas’s status as a suspect to the ELTA news agency. The office said 64 people have been recognised as victims in the investigation.

Jakubauskas is the mufti of the Spiritual Centre of Sunni Muslims of Lithuania. The TV3.lt news portal first reported that he was a suspect.
