Estonian public broadcaster ETV will mark October’s music month with a new music quiz, concerts and other programmes, ERR reported.
International Music Day on Thursday, October 1, will culminate in a gala at 10.30pm in the main hall of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. The event will announce this year’s music award winners from the Estonian Music Council and the sound arts endowment of the Estonian Cultural Endowment. The academy’s wind ensemble and soloists will perform.
A new programme, “The Great Music Quiz,” starts on ETV on Friday, October 9. Two teams will compete in eight rounds covering well-known and lesser-known Estonian and international music, with viewers at home also able to play along. The first episode features teams led by Lauri Liiv and Hanna-Liina Võsa, and by Johan Randvere and Maria Listra.
Other musicians appearing on the show include Liis Lemsalu, Ott Lepland, Maarja-Liis Ilus, Koit Toome, Korea, Genka, Tanja, Mihkel Mattisen, Merlyn Uusküla, Teele Viira and Silver Laas. Martin Trudnikov leads the live band and has arranged 150 short musical excerpts. Birgit Sarrap hosts.
On October 10, ETV will show the musical “Romeo and Juliet,” which premiered earlier this year at Unibet Arena. Its cast includes Jaagup Tuisk, Kaire Vilgats, Ott Lepland, Kalle Sepp, Wanda-Helene Ollep, Lauri Liiv and Jaagup Kreem. The music was composed by members of the band Terminaator, who also perform in the production, alongside Edmar Tuule’s orchestra.
A programme dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the city of Tõrva will air on October 17. It will feature George Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess,” performed in Tõrva nearly 30 years ago. That performance made the city the venue for the largest open-air classical music concert in Estonia’s history.
Submissions for the Eesti Laul competition are open until October 8. ETV entertainment editor-in-chief Karmel Killandi urged entrants to think about their stage performance as well as their songs, including how they could engage audiences in person and on television.
This weekend, ETV will also show programmes about Sting and Tiit Kõrvits, who both turn 75 this year.
