Wartime explosives found in two Lithuanian districts

Wartime explosives were found on Tuesday in Vilkaviškis and Jurbarkas districts, LRT reported.

A report from the Marijampolė County Police Headquarters alerted authorities to an 82 mm mortar shell found in a field on Matuliškių Street in Gudeliai village, in the Šeimena eldership. The Shield plan was activated. Firefighters guarded the area until an explosive ordnance disposal team from the Colonel Juozas Vitkus Engineer Battalion arrived and took the shell away for destruction.

A hand grenade was also found in a forest in Endriušiai village, in the Smalininkai eldership of Jurbarkas district. The Shield plan was activated there as well, and firefighters remained at the scene until disposal specialists arrived. They identified the device as an F1 hand grenade from the Second World War and destroyed it at the location.
