Lithuanian defence minister apologises over nearly 48,000-euro party

Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas has apologised after a party for ministry employees costing nearly 48,000 euros prompted public criticism, and pledged to establish a new system for motivating staff and strengthening the ministry community, LRT reported.

“Was the event’s format, timing and cost appropriate in the current geopolitical situation? I think not,” Kaunas wrote on Facebook on Tuesday. He apologised to those who felt anger, disappointment, concern or doubt over the situation, adding that he understood their reaction.

Kaunas said the minister was responsible for the ministry’s work, regardless of their involvement in particular processes or decisions, and that there would be no search for scapegoats.

He said he had agreed with the chair of the ministry’s trade union to prepare a clear and transparent system for motivating employees and strengthening the community. It should reflect current realities, ensure rational use of funds and avoid giving the public reasonable cause for concern, he wrote.

The minister also said the ministry’s administrative and chancellery operations had problems requiring a systemic review, and that he would give the matter his personal attention.
