DOM fashion show opens 21st Design Night festival

A fashion show featuring four Estonian designers opened the 21st Design Night festival on Monday evening. The event, called DOM, short for “Design is in fashion,” explores clothing design beyond the format of a conventional fashion show, ERR reported.

This year’s show focused on how to make more considered choices in a world producing ever more clothes and accessories. It highlighted that sustainability involves not only materials but also quality, care, repair, how long an item is worn and the emotional connection people form with it.

Larissa Kondina of Mekoome, Kairi Getman, Hannes Rüütel and Stella Soomlais presented their work. The show brought together craftsmanship, slow fashion, the reuse of existing materials and designs intended to last beyond a single season.

Festival director Ilona Gurjanova said the event had a strong opening, with a larger-than-expected audience and many international visitors.

Karmen Teesi Pregel directed DOM, with lighting by Timo Valge, sound by Rando Arand and artwork by Maria Elisaveta Roosalu.

The festival runs until October 4. Its theme, “The future of product design,” looks at how sustainability, adaptability, awareness of materials and new technologies shape the next generation of products and services. The program includes more than 100 events, among them an international design conference, exhibitions, workshops, talks, the Disainitänav design market and a children’s area.
