Lithuanian bishops to investigate crimes against minors and vulnerable adults

The Bishops’ Conference will launch an investigation into crimes against minors and vulnerable adults in the Church since Lithuania regained independence, LRT reported. The conference said the needs of victims would come before the institution’s reputation.

The scope and format of the investigation have not been decided. The conference is consulting the Holy See for guidance. Archbishop Gintaras Grušas had previously said it was not yet time for such an inquiry.

Religion commentator Toma Bružaitė said the announcement left questions about whether the investigation would be internal or external. Bishop Arūnas Poniškaitis said the conference had reviewed the situation and asked the Vatican for guidance drawing on international experience.

The announcement follows the opening of a court case against priest Tadas Švedavičius, who is accused of pedophilia. A separate case against priest Ryšardas Peciunas, accused of possessing child pornography, began the previous week. Both priests have been suspended from their duties.
