Estonian central bank issues silver coin honouring forest brothers

Estonia’s central bank will issue a silver commemorative coin on Tuesday honouring forest brothers, ERR reports. The coin has a face value of 15 euros and will be sold for 124 euros.

The coin has a mintage of 2,500 and was struck at the Lithuanian Mint. Its design was created by Kaupo Kangro.

The coin depicts forest brothers hiding at the edge of a forest. The vertical rhythm of the tree trunks symbolises the boundary between occupied territory and the free land of the forest brothers. The forest represents both shelter and separation, while light shining between the trees refers to the memory of a free Estonia and hope for its restoration.

The coin is part of Eesti Pank’s resistance-themed series, which honours individuals and groups that in different ways resisted the occupation of Estonia and stood for an independent and free Estonia.

A commemorative coin dedicated to Finnish Boys has previously been issued in the same series. In 2027, the central bank will issue a specially designed two-euro coin dedicated to defence force veterans.
